News for the fishing year starting April 17, 2010

Here we go again,

As we all find the 2010 fishing season approaching, I hope everyone has had a great 2009 and are in good health. We are looking forward to 2010, lots of changes around here. All for the better. I hope everyone can say the same.

The season will start out on Saturday, April 17th. We will run seven days a week until Columbus Day in October.

We have a lot to talk about this newsletter, hopefully it will all get covered. The first thing I would like to cover is a purchase I made last season. I bought a "drift anchor", or "chute", for the boat. That has changed the dynamic of fishing for us. What a huge difference it is fishing with this thing. One of my best recollections is making a drift that lasted for three and a half hours, non stop catching of Cod and Haddock, the drift carried me two and a half miles, and the lines were straight up and down the whole time. The best part was the wind was blowing twenty five knots out of the Northeast. The great thing is it cuts way down on the dogfish catching, the boat sits exactly like it were on anchor, but you are still moving, hence cutting down on the dogs. It is my new favorite toy. Boy am I glad I spent all that money on the new Davit pole.

Lets just say we had a great year in the Bottom fish department.

I am sure by now, everyone has heard about the new fishing license the Federal Government says we need. I could go on and on about this subject, but the bottom line is this. I have to have the license for the boat. So you, as paying customers will not need to purchase, or in the case of the first season, acquire one. So, no need to worry about that.

We had a few Striper trips last year that went pretty well, actually I am looking forward to using the chute this season. I could be wrong, but I think the chute is going to be a superb addition to my Striper arsenal. We will have to wait and see. Lets give it a go Frank.

Bluefishing only gets a fair, I will explain this in the next paragraph. When the Bluefishing was good, it was good, when it was bad, it was bad. They would come in waves. Good for two days, then bad for two weeks. I think they were out on Jeffries.

Another thing you may have heard about is the Herring fishery. This new regulation has changed the rest of the fishery as well. It is sort of complicated, but I will try to some it up as best and quick as I can. The Herring boats used to come through our area once a week and decimate our herring population. Now, they are not allowed in our area. So there is a massive supply of Herring. Now the fish, that includes all species of fish that eat Herring,(I have to say, it must be a bummer to be on the bottom of the food chain) such as Cod, Haddock, Striper, Tuna, Bluefish and whales(I know that whales are not fish, but you get the point) do not have to go searching for thier next meal. So they don't leave. I will say this, the amount of wildlife on the N.H. Seacoast was incredible. This will be my 30th season fishing out of Rye Harbor, and I have never seen anything like it. Ever. From about July first, the Tuna and Whales smashing the surface of the water, at times, was breathtaking.

I am going to try and give this whole "football tuna" fever an aspirin, but I do not think it will help. I am going to try to kill one of these things this year. I fed the fever a Tylenol last season, but the fever won that battle and I went zero for four. I can feel it, this is my year for those silly little buggers. I will keep you posted on that.

Lastly, most of you know by now, that after 18 years in our old house, we decided it was time to move on. My wife and I have purchased a house in Rye. We were sad to leave our friends, but they are only ten minutes down the road. I saw a tear trickle down my wifes face as the moving truck pulled out with the final load. But she was very happy pulling in to the "new house". Life goes on. Anyway, the whole point to this is that in the next couple years we will be phasing out the 603-926-0483 phone number. The 603-964-9906 number now rings at the office/house. I will make callbacks when I get home from fishing. So remember to book early, also book often, to ensure your date of choice. Don't forget to check in on my "Useless Rambling" section. Sometimes there is some funny stuff on that page.
